One of North-eastern states of India, Tripura is the third-smallest state of the country. It is surrounded by Bangladesh to the north, south and west and states of Assam and Mizoram to the east. Around 30% of the state population belongs to Schedules Tribes, majority of which speaks Kokborok. A large population in the state speaks Bengali.
The state of Tripura is geographically cut-off as there is only one main highway connecting it to the rest of the country. More than half of the land area of Tripura is covered with forests. Geographical isolation has slowed down the pace of economic progress in the state. Several parts of the state are stricken by poverty and unemployment caused due to limited infrastructure and opportunities. Agriculture and related activities are main source of livelihood for majority of population of Tripura. Due to hilly terrain, cultivable land in the state is also limited.
Digital inclusion in the state can help fill developmental gaps within the state. Knowledge to operate digital tools will help the general populace of Tripura to stay digitally connected to the outside world if not physically. Information and communication technology will keep tribal population stay up-to-date with latest entitlement and schemes introduced especially for their upliftment by the government. Internet connectivity and training on how to use it effectively will keep the people of Tripura well informed about their rights related to healthcare, sanitation and education, besides new opportunities in livelihood.
In the March of 2016, state capital Agartala became India’s third third Internet Gateway as a part of an internet connectivity project between India and Bangladesh. Leading a digital revolution in the state, people of Tripura would now be able to avail more reliable and highspeed internet.
