“Why aren’t you marrying off your daughter yet? Do you want us to approach the people who will bring rishtas for your daughter?” These questions were bombarded at Arun Mahto, the moment his daughter Priya completed her 11th Standard. It took a long time for Priya to fight against the society and convince her parents to let her continue her studies as she wants to support her family and will also be a role model for both of her younger siblings. To help Priya, DEF supported her with a digitally equipped centre, where she regularly conducts digital literacy classes with a number of students from her locality. The same villagers who used to pass derogatory remarks on Priya’s life and career is availing the benefits of various services offered by the centre. At her centre, digital services like photocopy, printing, scanning, pension withdrawal etc. are being provided. Availability of these services has not only offered convenience to people in the community but has also helped in creating new opportunities. The centre is supporting her financially which also enables her to continue her higher education along with supporting her family.
