Little did Centre Coordinator Yusuf expected; over a hundred women and almost 50 children thronged the CIRC, Mungaska (Alwar). In an attempt to revive the languishing arts and crafts of the region, the activity gave women a platform to showcase their skills in creating handicraft items, including stitching, weaving, embroidering and much more. ‘The women of the community are highly talented and can make a decent living out of their skills. All they need is support, entrepreneurial skills and a bigger platform to prosper’, believes Yusuf. A special presentation to generate better understanding of the ‘Buddy4Study’ programme was also conducted. Best showcases were awarded positions at the end of the activity. Yusuf wishes to open a stitching centre within the CIRC. He feels that promotion of traditional handicrafts can potentially fetch lucrative livelihoods for the entire community. Women artisans are practically sitting on a gold-mine-he believes. As a renowned folk musician, Yusuf thoroughly understands the ever-increasing demand for Rajasthani handicrafts in domestic as well as international markets. Therefore, he constantly works towards encouraging the youth of the community to come forward and take greater interest in traditional handicrafts making.
