In the month of June, Digital Empowerment Foundation launched Haat India, an initiative to source products by rural masses and to make them available to the ones in cities. As a part of the initiative, a mini-stall was set-up within the DEF head-office from 24th to 26th June where-in freshly handpicked mangoes from the fruit gardens or Farukkhabad in Uttar Pradesh and pure honey from the herbal hills of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh were made available. The products attracted a large crowd and a large stock got sold off within two days. While orders are still pouring in, it is evident that city dwellers have special demand for rural based products. The initiative would also help rural entrepreneurs expand and make a greater marketplace for themselves.
