DEF IRHR team members Niki Shah, Rajat Kumar, Pawas Suren, Rahul Choudhary, Bijo Abraham, and Maubani Dutta with CIRC team member Monika Sharma conducted a workshop on Internet Rights and Human Rights with CIRC users and community members, in partnership with Tarang Kala Kendra. The interactive workshop enabled users to understand the importance of ICT tools and internet and how internet can be utilized to exercise their basic human right to freedom of expression online, apart from accessing the internet for online banking, book rail tickets, gaining information, and entertainment.
Through the workshop, DEF team members learned that users are well aware of their internet rights. Users shared their views and stories about freedom of expression online, personal and societal challenges, individual responsibility. They also shared stories that have had a positive impact in their community. For example, a user shared a story of how community members from Azaad Foundation helped save a girl child from the web of sex trafficking and alerted the parents of the girl child. As a result, the girl child is now life a normal and safe life with her parents.
Users mentioned that freedom of expression is a fundamental right which is guaranteed under the Indian Constitution. And each individual should exercise this right to positively affect individuals, communities and the country to solve challenges and enable a fruitful living for all—without any discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, or caste.
At DEF, we encourage individuals and communities to share their stories on challenges as well as positive ideas, thoughts, life circumstances or acts have transformed their lives and the lives of their communities.
